Learn how we estimate your earnings

  • Our pay rates vary by client location/zone. Depending on the client’s state of residence, clients belong to Zone 1 (CA), Zone 2 (DC, MA, MD, NY, VA, WA), or Zone 3 (all other states). If you treat clients in different states/zones, different rates will apply accordingly. The composition of states in each zone can change at Talkspace’s discretion depending on the market and shifts in demand.
  • Estimated earnings presume 52 working weeks in a year, are calculated based on the average split between live and asynchronous sessions on the Talkspace platform, and are only applicable for our independently licensed 1099 contract therapists. Actual earnings may vary due to factors such as caseload, client engagement, and type of session.
  • For details about our pay rates, please scroll down to our FAQ section. Bonuses are earned for engagement with new clients. Estimated earnings are NOT inclusive of engagement bonuses so your earnings will likely be higher than this estimate!

How is therapy delivered on Talkspace?

Talkspace is an online therapy platform connecting licensed therapists with clients in all 50 states. All therapy is delivered through the secure, HIPAA-compliant Talkspace platform, either via the web or the iOS app.

Depending on the client’s plan, we offer Live Sessions (Video, Audio, and Chat). Additionally, we offer asynchronous messaging via text and audio—this means your clients’ messages don’t require an immediate response, and you always have the flexibility to process and thoughtfully engage on your schedule. Communication and response times are similar to email rather than instant messaging. Online therapy is proven to be as effective, if not more effective than face-to-face therapy.

Is Talkspace free to join as a therapist?

Yes. Talkspace is free to join and use as a provider as there are no joining fees.

Is it possible to be a Talkspace therapist while also doing other work?

Yes! Talkspace can supplement existing work as you are not bound by a non-compete agreement.

As an Independent Contractor, you can dedicate as much time as you want to Talkspace. Use Talkspace to fill in openings in your schedule or build a full caseload on our platform - up to you! Our job is to help make your job easier and more convenient. You’ll have flexibility in your schedule while practicing the craft you love.

How do I apply as a Talkspace therapist?

Making high-quality mental health support accessible to all is the Talkspace mission, and we're fulfilling it with the help of the most caring and committed mental health providers to be found.

There is no cost for providers to join the Talkspace platform. Talkspace Providers are

  • Social Workers (LCSW, LICSW, etc.)
  • Marriage & Family Therapists (LIMFT, LMFT, etc.)
  • Mental Health Counselors (LCMHC, LMHC, etc.)
  • Professional Counselors (LPCC, LCPC, LPC, etc.)
  • Psychologists

To become a contract provider, submit your application.

What is the application process? How long does onboarding and credentialing take?

After completing the initial application form, there are a few important steps to verify your licensure and background such as submitting your licensure information and malpractice insurance, completing a background check, signing your contract, as well as training and credentialing before you see clients.

The length of this process can vary depending on the pace at which you complete the onboarding and credentialing tasks.

What kind of training does Talkspace provide?

We require providers to complete 1) a virtual, asynchronous "Starting at Talkspace" training before seeing Talkspace clients and 2) compliance training after getting on the platform. You’ll be paid for your time after successfully completing both trainings.

Also, Talkspace offers live webinars, drop-in sessions, lunch and learns, and ongoing continuing education webinars where you can earn CE credits! Other resources, such as the Provider Help Center, Provider Manual, and a dedicated Provider Support Team are available to help answer any questions you may have.

What is my employment and tax status?

The majority of Talkspace’s clinical network consists of providers who are 1099 contractors. 1099’s will receive the proper tax documentation to file at the end of the year. Providers are still responsible for individual tax obligations. Information on this webpage is specific to our 1099 independently licensed contractors.

We offer occasional W-2 independently licensed therapist positions with salary and benefits, depending on state licensure. For current opportunities, visit our Careers Page.

How do I get paid?

With Talkspace, you earn money both for conducting live sessions and engaging in messaging therapy with clients. You can also earn bonuses for clinical engagement with new clients on the platform.

What is the reimbursement rate?

At Talkspace, you only treat clients who reside in your state(s) of licensure. You’ll be compensated for live sessions and asynchronous messaging, with rates varying by client location. Depending on the client’s state of residence, clients belong to Zone 1 (CA), Zone 2 (DC, MA, MD, NY, VA, WA), or Zone 3 (all other states).

These rates are only applicable for independently licensed providers; associate or provisionally licensed providers will receive different pay rates. 60-minute live sessions with Zone 1 clients are paid $90.00, $78.00 for Zone 2 clients, and $70.00 for Zone 3 clients. These rates are prorated for shorter 30- & 45-minute sessions. Asynchronous messaging rates depend on the client plan type. Additionally, you can earn bonuses for new client engagement.

Please note that the composition of states in each Zone could be subject to change at Talkspace’s discretion depending on the market and shifts in demand.

How often do I get paid?

1099 providers are paid semi-monthly and via direct deposit. Services rendered during the 1st - 15th of the month will be reimbursed on the 25th of that month, and services rendered during the 16th - through the end of the month will be reimbursed on the 10th of the following month.

All 1099/independent contractors are responsible for individual tax obligations, but Talkspace will handle all insurance billing to ensure providers are paid conveniently and on time.

Our platform helps provide transparency around pay with a tracker that provides your estimated monthly earnings.

Do I have to check client insurance eligibility or submit claims to insurance?

Talkspace will manage client benefits/insurance eligibility, help submit claims, and work directly with the insurance carrier as needed so that you can spend all your time focused on treating the client - rather than on insurance or administrative tasks.

Regardless of your client's insurance status, you will still receive Talkspace’s standard reimbursement rates for live sessions.

What insurance companies does Talkspace work with?

Talkspace accepts insurance from many major insurance providers including Cigna, Optum, Carelon, Aetna, Regence, Anthem, TRICARE, traditional Medicare, and more.

Who are Talkspace clients? How do I get clients?

Talkspace clients include employees seeking counseling through their organization’s benefits, individuals covered by our insurance partners, and those who sign up directly through the platform and pay ‘out of pocket’. Talkspace matches you with clients based on their state of residency and preferences, and your areas of expertise. The ability to be matched with members outside of your local area gives you a larger client pool and allows you to help more people.

How do I get referrals/matches?

Referrals come to you via the Talkspace platform. Talkspace has a proprietary matching system that pairs clients with therapists using an innovative and efficient algorithm. A provider is matched with a client based on criteria including, but not limited to: the client’s state of residency, presenting problem, and personal preference, as well as the provider’s areas of expertise, availability, etc.

How often do I have to respond to clients?

Talkspace asks that you set your availability to respond to clients’ messages 5 days a week (your preferred days). This does not mean you need to have live session availability on all those days.

Is there a minimum number of clients I need?

There is no minimum number of clients a provider should have, and the maximum number of clients a provider can have is 100.

What is the time commitment?

There is no minimum hours/caseload requirement; Talkspace contract providers have flexibility in their schedules.

Many of our contract therapists use Talkspace to maintain a small weekly caseload, which serves as an additional source of income alongside their other employment.

What type of support does Talkspace provide its therapists?

Talkspace offers live training, drop-in sessions, lunch and learns, and ongoing continuing education webinars where you can earn CE credits! Other resources, such as the Provider Help Center, Provider Manual, and a dedicated Provider Support Team are available to help answer any questions you may have.
