Revia (naltrexone): Online prescriptions for substance abuse

Revia (naltrexone) is a FDA-approved medication that helps manage alcohol and opioid use disorders by reducing cravings and supporting recovery. Licensed psychiatric providers at Talkspace can evaluate your symptoms over video and provide an online naltrexone prescription as part of a broader recovery plan, filled locally or through Amazon Pharmacy.

An initial evaluation by a Talkspace psychiatric provider is required before medication is prescribed. If appropriate, medication will be prescribed for home delivery or for pickup at your local pharmacy. Medication prices are not included in the evaluation price. Talkspace psychiatric providers are unable to prescribe controlled substances and stimulants.

What is naltrexone used for?

Naltrexone is primarily used to support recovery from alcohol and opioid use disorders. By reducing cravings and blocking the pleasurable effects of substances, it helps address specific challenges in recovery, including:

  • Persistent cravings for alcohol or opioids
  • High risk of relapse after detox
  • Difficulty controlling substance use
  • Emotional and psychological dependence on substances
  • Struggles with maintaining long-term sobriety

Who shouldn't take Revia (naltrexone)?

Naltrexone isn't recommended for people who:

  • Are currently using opioids or are in acute opioid withdrawal, since it can trigger sudden, severe withdrawal symptoms
  • Have acute hepatitis or liver failure
  • Have failed a naloxone challenge test
  • Have a known hypersensitivity to naltrexone

What are the side effects of naltrexone?

Medication may be prescribed when clinically appropriate based on an evaluation by a licensed healthcare provider.

Common side effects of naltrexone may include:

  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite

You may experience side effects when you first begin taking naltrexone that lessen or dissipate once you’ve been taking it for several weeks or months. Treatment results may vary by individual.

However, more serious side effects could include:

  • Liver damage (such as elevated liver enzyme levels)
  • Severe allergic reactions (swelling of the face, lips, or tongue)
  • Depression or mood changes

If you experience any of these more serious side effects or notice new symptoms after starting naltrexone, contact your healthcare provider right away for guidance.

What real members are saying

"We were paired with a super helpful couples therapist and even in just a few short months, our marriage feels back on track. Highly recommend it, and the app just makes the service even easier to use on the go.”

Annecharbs, App store

“Our experience with couples therapy was great! Couldn’t have asked for a better way to do therapy. Loved our therapist. Loved the convenience of writing whenever we had a chance — our lives are so busy that I think it’d be nearly impossible to go somewhere.”

Yelrihs86, App store

“We love our therapist; he’s the best. We’ve been with him for a year. We like his realness and his candor. He won't let us, like, kind of just meander. If we're making progress in a certain direction he’ll keep guiding us there.”

Danny and Ann, Talkspace users

“My husband and I have come a long way, thanks to Shannon. Our fights have decreased and our overall communication tactics have improved. I am so thankful for this service and her help.”

Talkspace user, Direct review

“It has helped me find the best professional therapy and psychiatry to assist with my mental health issues. It works around my schedule and is very convenient.”

Marlena, Trustpilot

“My care team at Talkspace has been instrumental in my mental health journey. I have a therapist for weekly visits and a psychiatrist for medication management. They have both been incredible and have helped me so much in my journey.”

Tiffanie, Trustpilot

“I found a great therapist on Talkspace and she's noticed that I might be needing some help from a psychiatrist, so she placed a referral. I was able to see a psychiatric ARNP via video visit the next day! I'm definitely on my way to feeling better.

J Stewart, Trustpilot

“This is the best I've felt in decades, I was living my life on the edge all those years. I'm so thankful for Talkspace, my psychiatrist and my therapist. Life is finally coming together.”

Do you need a prescription for Naltrexone?

Yes, naltrexone is a prescription-only medication. You must consult with a licensed healthcare provider who can evaluate your medical history, assess your condition, and determine whether naltrexone is an appropriate treatment option for managing substance use disorder.

What is naltrexone?

Naltrexone is the generic form of a prescription medication (Revia) that helps manage alcohol and opioid use disorders by blocking the brain's response to alcohol and opioids. It works to reduce cravings and prevent relapse, supporting individuals through their recovery process and helping maintain long-term sobriety.

Can I get naltrexone online?

Yes, a healthcare provider can evaluate your symptoms through a virtual consultation. If appropriate, they can prescribe naltrexone online as part of a personalized treatment plan to support your recovery.

Can I get naltrexone over the counter?

No, naltrexone is not available over the counter. You must obtain a prescription from a licensed healthcare provider to obtain the medication.

What is naltrexone used to treat?

Naltrexone is an FDA-approved medication prescribed to help individuals recover from alcohol and opioid dependence.

Can I get a new Naltrexone prescription or prescription refill from Talkspace?

Yes, Talkspace providers can prescribe and refill naltrexone after a virtual consultation to ensure your treatment plan is effectively supporting your recovery.

Can I use my health insurance for online naltrexone prescriptions and refills?

Most major insurance plans cover naltrexone prescriptions, including those prescribed online through Talkspace. Coverage may vary, so it’s best to check with your insurance provider for specific details on your plan.

How much does naltrexone cost?

The cost of oral naltrexone can vary depending on insurance coverage, pharmacy pricing, and any available discounts. Without insurance, the cost can range from $100 to $300 per month, but manufacturer assistance programs may significantly reduce out-of-pocket expenses.

How do you take naltrexone?

Naltrexone is typically taken as a tablet or in an injectable form, depending on the prescribed treatment plan. Here’s how you would generally take it:

  • Oral naltrexone: It’s usually prescribed as a 50 mg tablet once daily. Your doctor will determine the exact dosage depending on your condition (e.g., alcohol dependence or opioid use disorder).
  • Injectable naltrexone (Vivitrol): This is typically administered as an injection by a healthcare professional once a month. The injection is given into the muscle (usually the buttocks), and your doctor or nurse will handle this. Talkspace providers do not prescribe or administer injectable medications, so this option would require seeing a provider in person.

How long do most people stay on naltrexone?

The duration of treatment varies by individual. Many people use naltrexone for several months to a year as part of a comprehensive recovery plan that may include therapy, lifestyle changes, and other forms of support. Your healthcare provider will help determine the appropriate length of treatment for your needs.
